Uber is just about the biggest taxi company in the world but doesn’t own a cab. Archymedes doesn’t have any Scatter symbols. True story.
Put that white coat on and let’s get chemical
The Alchymedes slot has picked up on my sudden renewed interest in chemistry and made a game that’s unique, fun and explores the idea of moving up levels during the game rather than moving towards bonus rounds. Proof of that is that this is a game with no free spins.

Alchymedes slot portrays science at its best
Seeing the Alchymedes slot was the next up on G2G slot review schedule got me thinking. Chemistry is cool. It was previously associated with awkward unmarried teachers who wore spectacles mended together with tape and ate little packed sandwiches at lunch prepared by their mothers. It was also associated with kids at school who loved the little explosions and colourful foam a lot more than they did gym class or a playground game of Kiss Catch (You catch someone, you kiss them. A good game is a simple game.)
But all that’s changed recently and it’s, therefore, no surprise that chemistry is very much at the heart of Alchymedes.
There was chemistry with Harry Potter and his trusted spell book and then there was more of it practised by Breaking Bad’s Walter White, whose chemistry skills were famously put to a slightly more immoral (and far more illegal) use.
And if it’s cool enough for Walter White, it’s cool enough for you and me.
But aside from the fashionable theme, there’s plenty to like about the Alchymedes mobile slot and it doesn’t even need free spins to make it one of this month’s G2G success stories.
Familiar theme but a rare appearance by Yggdrasil
It’s been a while since a new slot from Yggdrasil arrived undetected by sneaking into G2G review schedule of upcoming slots. The last time I had a game from them amongst our slot reviews was towards the end of last year when they hit us with the brilliant Vikings Go Bezerk. A mobile game filled with as much violence and destruction in it as a Saturday night out in Bolton city centre.
It’s worth pointing out that Alchymedes isn’t on the same level as ‘Bezerk’ in terms of investment, graphics and sheer madness but then again, no game supplier can afford to make too many big budget slots a year. Or else they’d go bankrupt. Like Donald Trump did. Several times.
And if Yggdrasil games have made rare appearances lately at G2G, then the same can’t be said of spells/witchcraft/potion related games. I loved the humour in Pig Wizard, the general weirdness of Charms and Witches and the light-hearted entertainment that was a such a big feature of Frog Grog.
They say you can take the boy out of Bolton but that you can’t take Bolton out of the boy. The first part probably explains the late night scuffles outside nightclubs and in kebab houses in city centres other than Bolton. But you can certainly take Alchymedes anywhere because its available on just about any Android or iPhone you can think of, in addition to being available on desktop, of course.
No scatters, no problem…
The first thing you’ll notice is the little trailer that precedes the actual gameplay of the Alchymedes slot. It features a weird little wooden cottage by the side of a lake with strange fluorescent-coloured gases and potions coming out of it. I haven’t been that scared of anything since Scary Spice suggested there might be another comeback Tour for the Spice Girls.
Once the game gets underway you’ll see it’s a 5×4 reel slot that seems to be taking place in a weird laboratory with a few skulls and dodgy coloured potions loitering around. Well, it was hardly going to be a normal laboratory, was it?
There are eight ‘regular’ symbols in the game. Four types of playing cards which are low-paying symbols and four types of coloured potions: green, purple, gold and blue.
You know how Uber is just about the biggest provider of taxis in the world but doesn’t actually own a single cab? Well, the Alchymedes mobile slot doesn’t have any Scatter symbols. True story.
But it does have Wilds, which I’ll talk about in the next section.
No scatter no bonus rounds
There basically aren’t any bonus rounds in the game as such but what happens is that the game has numerous levels, unsurprisingly starting at Level 1. You move to the next level by filling up the lower part of the strange glass object displayed to the left of the reels. And you fill it up by securing wins on the reels. Sound simple?
It’s as simple as an episode of Eastenders: a few words exchanged in the market square, someone isn’t getting on with her (abusive) boyfriend, a family feud erupts at the Queen Vic pub…episode ends with that dramatic music and the bum, bum, bum. Next episode. A few words exchanged…
Some people don’t really like playing slots on their mobile while they’re out and about. But consider this. You’re sitting on a park bench and there’s a pretty girl sitting next to you eating her prawn and mayonnaise sandwich and reading Cosmo on her lunch break. So all of a sudden you put your mobile that you were playing Alchymedes on exactly between you and her and ask her: do you think there’s any Chemistry between us?
Weighing up your options – the Alchemist’s Scale feature
I’ve gone through the basics of how to play Alchymedes so let’s just wrap things up in this free to play slot review of this great game by talking about its features.
Red or Green? The Alchemist’s Scale feature
At the end of each level you complete, you’ll have the chance to choose which feature you want in play when the next level starts. So you’ll be presented with the Alchemyst’s Scale and a straight choice of red or green. Green means that the Wild symbol appearing in the base game will spread like a deadly virus (too dramatic?) in the form set out at the start of the level. In other words, getting just one Wild Symbol will result in 4,5 or 6 different symbols automatically turning Wild in a pre-determined pattern. The idea of infected or contaminated reels isn’t totally original because it also featured in the brilliant Lost Vegas. But it’s still as cool as Iceland in winter.
Or you could go with red. This will result in a Multiplier (displayed to the right of the reels) having the potential to increase up to 100x during the round, though in truth it normally goes up to 3x or 4x but rarely much more than that. When you secure the last win on that round before you progress to the next one, that’s the win that the Multiplier will errr…apply…to. So if you won 30 coins before progressing to the next round and the Multiplier was on 3x when it happened, you’d win 90 coins.
At the end of each round, you have the choice to choose whichever of the two you prefer. The green one is more likely to get you to the next level quicker but if you get a 5x or 6x multiplier on that final win thanks to the red one, you can get a very decent payout.
Random Feature Bonus
Sometimes at the start of a new level, you’re awarded a Random Bonus Feature. It could be anything up to 2,000 coins, improved starting Multipliers, extra pattern positions or Rapid Multiplier Growth. You don’t get it that often but it makes a big difference when you do.
Alchymedes slot rebels against the norm
So many mobile slots are so similar these days that it feels a little weird to have one that doesn’t have a Scatter symbol or free spins round. But so what? Credit to Ygddrasil for going all Frank Sinatra and saying ‘I did it MY WAY…’.
Credit to Ygddrasil for going all Frank Sinatra and saying ‘I did it MY WAY…’.
It will take a little bit of getting used to so, by all means, read the instructions before diving in. But the Alchemist’s Scale in between rounds and general quirky nature of it all means the Alchymedes slot passes the ‘acid test’ (pun intended) with a B+.
Remember that to play Alchymedes for real money, you’ll need a real money account. So open one today and get your white coat into that mysterious laboratory as soon as possible.
