The new Forbidden Throne slot by Microgaming
When I started the review of Forbidden Throne slot, it got me thinking about the word ‘forbidden’. And more precisely, how many things these days are forbidden in one way or another. Smoking in bars and restaurants, drinking alcohol at most cricket matches, getting too near a painting at art exhibitions, liquids in your bag before you go through security, downloading movies. To name but a few.
Not that I’m suggesting that it’s not a good thing for any of these things to be forbidden; it’s just that there seems to be so many of them. Back in Biblical times, the only thing that was forbidden was the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden.
But let’s talk about the Forbidden Throne mobile slot, the most recent review of slots you can play for fun.
This new release comes to us thanks to our friends at Microgaming. Although they might have been better off calling themselves Macrogaming, such is their strength and influence within not only the world of online slots but gaming in general.
You’re ‘allowed’ to play Forbidden Throne on mobile
Despite the huge array of slots Microgaming has made – many of which can be found at the LeoVegas Casino – few are great. But then again, once in a while a new slot release turns out to be brilliant, like Lost Vegas. Tarzan is also one from their portfolio that is above average, though I didn’t like it quite as much as ‘Vegas’.
The slot’s Jackpot is 8,000 coins which can be won both during the base game and during the free spins round. You can secure that by getting 5 Wild Reels (all of them). But it’s not a Progressive Jackpot slot; that’s the most you can ever win and other plays putting money into it won’t get that number to rise.
You can play like a low-time recreational player for as little as ₹4 a spin or you can go all big-time, big high-roller, Mr Big Bucks by playing₹2000 a spin. A bit rich for my blood but if there weren’t folk out there willing to play for those sorts of amounts, then the likes of Microgaming wouldn’t make slots where you could play for those figures.
The mobile slot explores the fantasy theme that I see pop up quite often in casino games. Other examples of this genre include Warlords, Magic Mirror and Pixies of the Forest though the best-known slot of this genre is probably Immortal Romance made by…Microgaming. That said the slot that it most reminds us of Avalon II.
Play it on your desktop from the comfort of your home with the added benefit that few things in there are likely to be forbidden. Unless you have a girlfriend like G2G’s Manish does, in which case the list of things that are forbidden and aren’t forbidden are of a similar length.
Or play it on your mobile during your lunch break. If you fancy escaping from a world of deadlines, pointless meetings, petty office politics and irritable members of the IT Team, you might as well go full throttle and play a slot where you can come across a phoenix, a flying horse and a magical castle.
Cheers for showing up, Chris Hemsworth
There’s a real clean and crisp look and feel to the game. Almost polished. The symbols are all very much fantasy, mystical sort of stuff. The type that wouldn’t look out of place in a game of Dungeons and Dragons or something.
Amongst them, there are gems, amulets, crowns, helmets and spell books. The gems are the lower-paying symbols which seems a little unfair on them. If you can’t look forward to being worth more than an old helmet or dusty spellbook when you’re a gem, then life can be a little depressing.
There’s a Wild in the form of the game’s Logo and it can substitute for all symbols other than the Scatter. But if you thought that Wild symbol was the only Wild, you’d be wrong. A bit like Simon is always wrong. Or at least that’s what his girlfriend always says about him. More on that below.
The Scatter is a golden ball of fire and three or more of them take you to the free spins.
Not a huge amount to speak of in terms of audio.
Ok, so now it’s time to address the elephant in the room. Or the Loxodonta, to use its Latin name.
Is this slot a rip-off of Game of Thrones? The answer is no. Yes, it has the whole fantasy-theme going and I suppose the ‘Throne’ in its name would suggest that it’s trying to jump on the whole GOT bandwagon. But the similarities really do end there and it wouldn’t make any sense for Microgaming to do that. Why? Because the official Games of Thrones slot is made by Quickfire, which is powered by…Microgaming. Glad I cleared that one up.
Up to 30 available in free spins feature
This is the time to talk about how to play Forbidden Throne and more precisely, how the Forbidden Throne features operate.
Each of the five reels can become a Stacked Wild. Correction: at least one of the five reels does become a Wild on every spin. Sometimes, it’s more than one. Sometimes it’s all five.
And each of the Reels has a different Stacked Wild. On Reel 1 it’s a beautiful unicorn that looks like it’s made out of glass. On Reel 3 it’s a somewhat spooky yet equally intriguing castle that looks as fascinating as it does dangerous. On Reel 4 is a sort of sorcerer who bears a big resemblance to a young Chris Hemsworth. Or is it Liam Hemsworth? No, it’s Chris I’ve just been told.
Reel 5: a phoenix. A creature I’ve seen before in Phoenix Sun but is infinitely scarier here.
And I saved the best for last. Because on Reel 2 you get a sorceress who’s the most gorgeous and seductive lady since Ursula Andress emerged from the surf all those years ago in Dr No. Before your time? Ask your Dad. Or watch the clip.
She looks like a cross between Cameron Diaz and Michelle Pfeiffer. And you can say what you like but that’s as good a cross between two ladies as you can get.
What is worth clarifying, is this: the Scatters can be overlayed on top of the Stacked Wilds. As an example, if you had two Scatters already across the first four reels and the fifth reel was a Stacked Wild, you could still get the final Scatter you needed on the fifth reel to activate the free spins.
Which brings us to…
Everything else about this slot so far is wonderfully unique and magical but the free spins are pretty straightforward.
Three golden/fire symbols give you 10 free spins, four gives you 20 and five gives you the maximum amount of 30. Good news; they can be re-triggered. Bad news: there aren’t any multipliers in play to boost your wins. Still, the amount o0f free spins you can get is significantly higher than you’d expect in most other slots.
Microgaming back in form
There’s plenty to like about this mobile game, which is refreshing news for fans of Microgaming slots. Over the past few months, they weren’t quite at the top of their game compared to what rivals like Elk Studios and NetEnt were doing. But this has got them back in the groove. So what do I like?
The fact that you get one Stacked Wild per spin is original and makes you feel like you’re always in the game, I fell in love with the Sorceress on Reel 2, the graphics are crisp and clean and the amount of free spins on offer is very generous by today’s standards.
I did, however, find the free spins quite hard to activate and as the main bonus feature, that’s slightly dangerous territory. But that’s not a criticism as such. That’s just the sign of a quite high-volatility slot and as I know, there’s nothing wrong with one of those. All it means is that activating the free spins round isn’t that frequent but when you manage it, you’ll be highly rewarded. And in the meanwhile the guaranteed Stacked Wild you get on each spin keeps some smaller wins ticking over.
All in all, it’s a good slot that will appeal to fans of the fantasy genre and those who are prepared to be a little patient in order to get some big wins.
Playing the Forbidden Throne slot for real money isn’t forbidden. All you need is a real-money account at an online casino. And that’s only forbidden if you’re from a country where I’m not able to accept customers from. It will only take you a couple of minutes to find out if that’s the case.
