European Roulette Guide

European roulette is the most common type of roulette there is. When someone commonly talks about the game they most often mean European roulette.

On this page I go through the European roulette rules, some betting strategies and where you can play this exciting casino game online for real money in India.

Basics of European Roulette

If you have already played roulette then you already know the rules of European roulette. If you are new to the game let’s take a look at how it works.

The European roulette wheel has 37 numbered compared to American roulette which has 38. Numbers range from 0 to 36. Numbers are alternately coloured, starting from 1 to 36 which alternate between red and black. Single zero remains in green.

The game starts when the wheel is spun and it ends when the ball has landed in a slot. The ball is always spun in the opposite direction of the wheel.

You win by placing a bet guessing correctly on where the ball lands.

The house edge of European roulette is 2.63%.

Types of Bets

European roulette has two types of bets also known as outside and inside bets.

Inside bets are off a single number, small groups or adjacent numbers while outside bets usually comprise of larger number groups.

Outside bets are placed outside the numbers fields and involve a large range of numbers.

Special Rules for European Roulette

There are two European roulette rules that are applicable in only some land-based casinos and Indian online casinos.

La Partage is the first of these and it states that you get half of your money back if the ball lands in the 0 slots if you made an even odds bet. Even odds bet is High/Low, Red/Black or Even/Odd.

En Prison is another variant of this rule but it states that the player can let his stake stay on the table for the next spin giving him a second chance.

History of European Roulette

European roulette is originally from France and the word itself means wheel in french. It is said to have been invented in the early 1700 but its current state is said to be from 1796.

The French roulette wheel had 0 and 00.

The European roulette version with a single zero comes from Monte Carlo where Europe’s elite enjoyed gambling lavishly. Since the elite often decided trends it later became the favoured wheel throughout Europe and thus European roulette was born.
