Guide to Understanding House Edge in Blackjack

You might have heard 6:5 Blackjack and 3:2 Blackjack and pondered over the terminologies.

If you are new to real money casino games online, this particular term refers to the house edge in classic card table game, Blackjack.

About the Game

Blackjack, as a game, is played with a standard card deck of 52 cards. Each denomination is assigned value as per their face values, especially the cards 2 to 10. The jacks, kings, and queens are worth 10 each and aces are used either for 1 or 11.

Player’s objective is to draw close to a total of 21 and not go over that number, as compared to the dealer’s cards.

Now what we are going to talk about is 3:2 and 6:5 which are the payouts available at different tables in Blackjack both in land based and Indian online casinos.

Difference Between 6:5 and 3:2 Blackjack

These terms refer to the win payout percentages. When you are playing 3:2 Blackjack, you get paid out 3 dollars for every 2 dollars that you bet which is 1.5:1 as per the odds.

If you are playing a Blackjack session with payout ratio 6:5, here you get paid $6 for every $5 bet on the game which leads to an odds ratio of 1.2:1.

Differences or 3:2 vs. 6:5 Blackjack is with reference to the house edge.

How the Difference Affects your Bets

The house edge is increased by 400% when the 6:5 variant is played. In the basic version of 3:2 Blackjack the house edge remains in the range of 0.5%.

Hence, if you wager $100 then the average they can take on is $0.5 when you play 6:5 the edge shoots up and becomes 2% and hence, for every $100 you wager you would be contributing $2 towards the house. The differences are magnified since serious bettors make wagers in thousands.

Land Based Casinos favor 6:5 Blackjack

In modern times most US casinos are offering the 6:5 Blackjack instead of 3:2.

This change has become popular since the house edge increases by 400% and often, players, especially beginners and novices, are not aware of the difference and how it costs them.

This is the sole reason why I am writing this guide. Because I do not want you to be a novice player once you start playing blackjack online.

Online Casinos favor 3:2 Blackjack

There is harder competition at online casinos since changing from casino to casino takes just a few seconds. For that reason they always provide at least one 3:2 blackjack game online.

But they still have some tables that have 6:5 so be sure to check before you start playing.

The most important blackjack strategy of all is making sure that you are playing at an 3:2 table.

Pitfalls of 6:5 Blackjack Games

If you bet on a traditional game of Blackjack $10 then you stand to win $15 when the payoff is 3:2. On the other hand, if you opt for a game of 6:5 then the same bet amount of $10 will get a player $12.

Hence, as compared to the 3:2 version, in 6:5 version one loses out by about $3 for every win. If you play four Blackjacks in an hour then it would cost you $12 which is the profit that the house is getting over the 3:2 traditional games.

That is why you should always play blackjack at online casinos in India since they give you the best rates with 3:2 games.

Most average players do not notice the difference and many are unaware of the lower rates they are getting on their bets.

However, the earnings of a player are impacted, especially when they wager in thousands. For that reason, it is necessary to keep a lookout for the percentage wager of a Blackjack session before one begins.

The casinos listed below are all reviewed by me and my team members and all offer 3:2 games.
